First things first, we clear away any existing vegetation and take out the debris. That means old turf, roots and stones that would leave you with a bumpy surface. Then we rotavate the soil to break up compaction. This matters most on new build properties, where heavy machinery has often squashed the ground down hard.
Most of the time, we need to add topsoil too. We aim for a depth of 100 to 150mm of good quality topsoil, which gives the grass roots room to settle in properly. Poor soil means a poor lawn, no matter how nice the turf is. We level and grade everything carefully, with gentle falls running away from your buildings so water doesn’t pool.
Before the turf goes down, the ground gets a final rake and a light consolidation. You want it firm enough to walk on without sinking, but not packed down hard.
